Principles:

Companions of Christ should be aware that we are in God’s presence when visiting someone.

The time shared is a blessing not only for the person in need but for the Companion as well. Companions of Christ are compassionate, caring not curing. We ask open ended questions which leads to learning more about the person we are visiting and sometimes leads them to their own answers verse offering advice. The care offered from you serves as an opportunity for those we are visiting to make choices and grow.

Companions of Christ promote a non-judgmental atmosphere that is sacred and safe for someone to talk about their experiences, thoughts, and feelings without fear of being criticized. It is okay to share your own experience if it relates to something the person would benefit from hearing.

We accept people as they are and actively listen without trying to solve the problem for them. Encourage there is a fine line between helping and enabling the person. Communicate understanding by paraphrasing what has been said, so there’s no miscommunication from what you heard and what they were trying to express.
