About a month ago, Scott Marr of Nebraska was found by his son unconscious and barely alive. The following day his family was told by hospital doctors that his recovery from an apparent stroke was not expected. They subsequently gave permission for his breathing tubes to be removed, and they started planning for his funeral. After a few days in a coma and the day after the breathing tubes were removed, he started to respond. He is currently at home and on the road to a full recovery. He said that, although he is not an extremely religious person, he believes in God, and what happened to him is just a proof that everything he has been told about God is true.

This is definitely not the first time you have heard this type of story that tells us that God indeed is a God of miracles. Actually, I have heard a few miracle stories right here in our Christian community and in Holy Name of Mary parish.

The gospel today tells us about Jesus’ first public miracle. I say public because He definitely performed a number of miracles in the privacy of the family’s home in Nazareth, perhaps even in the presence of relatives and friends. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the Blessed Mother did not hesitate to ask Him to perform a miracle at the wedding they were attending in Cana. Even though it seems that the Lord Jesus is about to say no to Mary, He granted her request.

In today’s gospel we have also heard the first and only command that the Blessed Mother gives in all Sacred Scriptures when she said, “Do whatever He tells you.” Her powerful words remind us that if we want to see miracles, we should indeed do whatever Jesus tells us to do.
