Tomorrow is the hundredth anniversary of the birth of President John F. Kennedy. To mark the occasion, the Post Office put out a beautiful stamp of Kennedy. Of course, we all know his most famous statement. If you ever visit Arlington National Cemetery, you’ll see the Eternal Flame and the words from his inaugural address in stone: “Ask not what your country can do for you. For those who are hooked on fishing, Smith Mountain Lake is one of the best places to be. Within its 20,600-acre reservoir is an abundance of popular game fish.
To go fishing you need at least a fishing rod, a reel, and a line with a hook at the end of it. But you need one more thing that is really important, because the fish will not bite an empty hook. (more…)

During one of the breaks at last week’s Priests’ Convocation, I was talking to Fr. Jay who absolutely loves the game of golf. It reminded me of 9 years ago when he was trying to convince me to learn how to play golf. I asked him to give me one good reason to spend several hours learning how to hit a small white ball with a long stick. In reply, he said, “Golf teaches you the virtue of humility.” And so I said, “Monday is my day off; I’ll see you on the course.” The rest is history. (more…)

A few hours ago Mother Teresa was canonized by Pope Francis at the Vatican, and she is now officially Saint Mother Teresa. It is interesting to note that even a saint like Mother Teresa has her critics. This should give us encouragement if, while trying to do something good for God and our neighbor, we are also criticized for our actions. (more…)
