Lifeteen Family Volunteer Project | Apple, Field Gleaning @ Johnsons Orchard | Saturday, October 8th

There are so many opportunities for you to serve in the mission to end hunger, right in your local community. Johnsons Orchard is now open for gleaning apples all Saturdays in September and two weekends in October. Harvested fruit will be distributed by the Society of Saint Andrew.

This is a great opportunity for our Holy Name of Mary teens and families to give back to the community.

We are now trying to organize an HNM Church group (teens & their families) to sign up for a picking/gleaning shift this coming Saturday, October 8th, 2022 | 9:00AM-12:00PM. Please see details below:

Field Gleaning @ Johnsons Orchard, Bedford County
Date: 9:00AM-12:00PM on Saturday, October 8th, 2022

Location: 1218 Elmos Rd, Bedford, VA 24523

Meet at: The pavilion for picnicking with a 15-foot Johnny Appleseed Statue
Shift description:
Apple gleaning in the orchard. Please dress for the weather, bring gloves, water bottle, a hat if desired & other personal items as needed. Specific details will follow later this week prior to Saturday.

Families are encouraged to attend this with your teens (you may also bring siblings) so you will drive to the location on your own and we meet as a Church group at the site. We will gather in prayer & fellowship (please bring a light snack/ drink of your choice to share) at the Picnic Pavilion immediately after the picking. 

We do need a Parent Volunteer to help organize on the day of the apple picking as Catechists are unable to attend. Please let me know if you are interested.

I do request you to kindly respond to Lisa Mason (cc: Louella and Danielle) at your earliest convenience if you are interested and willing to attend. We hope many of you will be able to join us!

For those of you who are keeping score at home, you may be saying to yourself: “Wait a minute. Today is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Why are you wearing white? Shouldn’t you be wearing green, and something’s weird with these readings that we did today.” And maybe, if you’re really, really keeping score at home, you would have noticed that the Collect at the beginning was…different.

Well, you’d be right, because today, the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time, we’ve just finished the season of Christmas, and we’re beginning the first part of Ordinary Time. Today, though, we are celebrating the beginning of the bicentennial year of our diocese. Two hundred years ago this year, our diocese of Richmond was formed. Prior to that, we were part of the diocese of Baltimore. (more…)

Can you guess who my favorite brother is and why? My favorite brother is Father Frank, because he always practices these three words, “Cherish no grudge.” People often ask me in response to that, “Who is my least favorite brother?” Can you dislike someone in your own family? I think dislike is too strong a word; perhaps distant would better describe my relationship to this brother. His name is Alton, and he lives in Minnesota. He was training for the priesthood, but he got expelled because he was smoking in the bathroom. This was in the 1950’s in Ireland, so it wasn’t an accepted thing. The gospel today picks up where we left off last week. We have Jesus performing another miracle of healing. Now, at first glance, you could say, “Oh, this is Jesus, the healer. He’s doing another miracle.” There’ve been many attempts in the past hundred or so years to explain the miracles away. The other day I was called to give the Last Rites at Smith Mountain Lake. The location was one of the few places at the Lake that I have never been, but with the assistance of the GPS I didn’t have any difficulty finding it. However, what this device didn’t know was that I was going to a group of apartment buildings, and this made my search more challenging. (more…)
